German TV Premiere - Der Erste Weltkrieg im Orient
Three-part documentary on the First World War in the Arab World and the Ottoman Empire
The three-part documentary with contributions by ZMO fellow Dr Heike Liebau and former ZMO director Peter Heine shows the effects of the World War on the Middle East and its current political and geographical shape. It also depicts the involvement of Germany and other belligerents in the suffering of Arab people, caused by the devastating conflict. The documentary will be aired for the first time on German TV by the politics and documentary channel phoenix.

Positions at the Graduate School "Global Intellectual History"
Doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships, Closing Date: 15 September 2016
The graduate school Global Intellectual History invites applications for 12 doctoral fellowship and 1 postdoctoral fellowship for the first round of the program starting in April 2017. Applications can be sent in until September 15, 2016. The Graduate School aims to explore intellectual reactions to processes of entanglement from the 18th to 20th century in their social, cultural and political contexts: the trans-border spread of ideas, claims to universal validity, as well as counter-movements and resistance to such claims. Travel Grants by the Volkswagen Foundation
Herrenhausen Symposium "The Long End of the First World War", Closing Date: 1 Nov. 2016
The Volkswagen Foundation offers travel grants for PhD students researching on the First World War in an outer European perspective. Applicants can win one of six travel grants to take part in the Herrenhausen Symposium "The Long End of the First World War" in Hanover, from May 8-10, 2017. It focuses on the relation between global history and social history, highlighting actors and regions, and it systematically engages with the issue of diverse periodizations. In discussing linkages between experience, historiography, and commemoration, the symposium aims at unsettling the notion of a static and clearly defined "end" of the First World War, a construct mainly based on European developments...

Open House Day - Tag der offenen Tür
European Heritage Days
As last year ZMO organizes its open house day in cooperation with the Historische Kommission zu Berlin. Visitors get an insight into the research of the two institutions in different lectures under the title "Migration and Diversity". Additionally the program offers a concert of Anatolian folk music by singer and musician Petra Nachtmanova and her band (Deniz Mahir Kartal and Engin Işık), a children program, oriental street food by Koshary Lux, as also guided tours through ZMO's working place, the more than 100 years old Mittelhof, build by famous German architect Hermann Muthesius. The open house day takes place in coordination with the nationwide Tag des offenen Denkmals in the framework of the European Heritage Days.

Beyond Commemoration: South Asians & the First World War
Cultural Exchange in a Time of Global Conflict
On 27 April 2016, the CEGC project, partly hosted at ZMO, held an event in London in collaboration with the National Archives, the artistic performance group Nutkhut, and the Heritage Lottery-funded project 'Far From the Western Front' on the South Asian contribution to the First World War. New Position for ZMO Alumnus Gilbert Taguem Fah
Ministry of Scientific Research and Innovation of Cameroon
ZMO congratulates its former associate Dr Gilbert Lamblin Taguem Fah on his nomination as "Conseiller Technique au Ministère de la Recherche Scientifique et de l'Innovation" in the Ministry of Science of Cameroon. Dr. Taguem Fah was associated at ZMO with an Alexander von Humboldt fellowship from 2008 till 2011. Here he worked on his research project "Contesting Knowledge and Negotiating New Identity: A Comparative Study of Islamic Reformist Movements in Chad and Cameroon".
